ONE OF TEN THOUSAND LAKES
Two dragonflies fly
crazily past me while mating
Buzzing in ecstasy
If that's what dragonflies do
What I know they are not doing
Is eating the mosquitoes that own this campsite
On a lake red with iron
No fish
But Minnesota mosquitoes
That regretfully deserve their reputation
So I note
Wearing a thermal shirt on a warm sunny day
Because the mosquitoes bite through everything else
Dragonflies might prefer screwing to eating
But it seems the mosquitoes definitively prefer eating
We had to hike a mile through deep woods
Then canoe across the lake to get here
So to look at it from the mosquitoes' point of view
They probably don't get many chances to feast
I hope dragonflies
Get hungry and not sleepy after screwing
I've had enough reminders
Of where I stand on the food chain
