REASON #49
By “nothing” I mean of
course
nothing that isn’t absolutely
necessary—that new Escalade,
for instance, or the high-definition
digital TV, the shoes, the clothes,
the endless mind-deadening distractions
that help us maintain the illusion
of life. In fact, we never really
“buy” anything—we merely breathe
it in as we do oxygen, ethereal,
almost, the way desire insinuates
itself into our lungs, burning
inert matter into brilliant flame.
And who would dare not breathe?
Do we question the corrosive
necessity of the structure of air?
Buying, are we not getting in touch
with our true natures, striving
for perfectability, purchasing
a foothold to a higher plane?
Our better angels shop on 5th Ave.
It is a spiritual act that fills
us with divine purpose, that lifts
our hearts towards the greater glory;
they starve their souls who buy nothing.
Many days are buy nothing days for Kevin Frey, who, when he's not
sitting at a desk staring at an often empty page, might be found
teaching or traveling or taking pictures. |
